Artificial grass or a natural lawn?

Artificial grass changes the maintenance routine, but it is not maintenance-free. Natural turf needs care too, and the better choice depends on the garden.

Natural turf

A natural lawn is living planting. It can grow, recover and change with the seasons, but it needs mowing and suitable conditions. Shade, heavy use, soil and watering affect how it performs. A new lawn also needs care while it establishes.

Artificial grass

A synthetic surface avoids mowing, but still needs routine cleaning and brushing. Its appearance does not change seasonally in the same way as grass, and the underlying base and drainage need careful planning. Product materials and their end-of-life route should be considered before choosing.

Think about drainage and heat

Neither option fixes poor drainage by itself. The ground and water route matter for both. Artificial surfaces can warm in direct sun, so consider shade, use and comfort during hot weather. Natural turf may need more watering during dry periods.

Compare the full life cycle

Ask how long the proposed product is expected to last under your use, what maintenance it needs and what happens when it is replaced. For natural turf, include watering, mowing and occasional repair. For artificial grass, include cleaning, brushing and product disposal.

List what matters most to your household, then compare a site-specific specification for each option. There is no universal answer for every Teesside garden.
