Artificial grass ground preparation and drainage
A stable base and sensible drainage plan are essential parts of an artificial lawn. Check the proposed groundwork before choosing the surface.

Why the base matters
Artificial grass laid over an uneven or unstable base can show dips, movement or standing water. The preparation should be designed for the site, taking account of the existing ground, levels, intended use and how rainwater can drain away.
Questions to ask about groundwork
- How much material will be excavated and removed?
- What sub-base and bedding layer are proposed?
- How will levels be set at the house, paths and borders?
- Where will surface water go, and what changes are needed?
- How will the perimeter and any joins be secured?
Drainage is site-specific
Permeable grass does not automatically solve every drainage problem. Water still needs a suitable route through the base and across the ground. If the garden already floods or the ground is slow to drain, that should be discussed before work starts. Do not accept a generic promise without a clear description of the proposed build-up.
Good preparation is mostly hidden when the job is complete. A written specification makes it easier to understand what is being installed beneath the surface.
